Blessing of the Fleet  / 10 Miles / Narragansett  / RI / Friday, July 29   - One of the nicest races in the area.  Starts at Narragansett High School and finishes at the Ocean.  Scenic run with moderate inclines and one hill at mile 8.5 .   Runs through several local neighborhoods with spectators in the hundreds to cheer you on.  Ample water stops throughout the race.  A large field of over 2200 runners.  The only negative is the traffic on a Friday afternoon for this 6:00 pm race.  The weather was warm with a temperature of 86 and some humidity at race time.  The start is congested with a very slow first mile.  Overall well worth the drive.  Mike Carroll led the club with an place of twenty-six and sixth place in his division.  Rich Allen was second with Andy Barron starting to get into racing form.  Jess Allen led the women with Martin Auty, Tara Neal, Jay McConnell, Ted and Mary Tyler filling out the pack.

Woodland Trail Series  / Five Miles / Uxbridge  / MA / Thursday, July 28 -  Results Link  Second race in the TVFR Woodland Trail Series -  From the Uxbridge Dam.

Paula Rourke Memorial  / 5 K / Shrewsbury / MA / Sunday, July 23 - Keith and Tara both had good races in Shrewsbury.  Keith second overall and Tara third in her division.  From Keith - The race is a 5K loop with a large hill early on and some rolling hills throughout the course. Barry Phelps took a break from logging in his marathon training mileage to cheer at the finish.  Overall the race is so so. Well marked with many volunteers, but there were a few issues with cars driving though the runners. Also the one water stop was inconveniently placed on the far side of a right.

Portsmouth Harbour Trail / 5 K / Portsmouth / MA / Saturday, July 9 -   I just want to know who else was running this race that Barry finished 8th and fourth in his division.  Holly Cow!!!!!  From Barry - Short rolling hills made for a pretty fast but challenging course (certified).  As the gun went off I once again realized how much speed work I HAVEN'T done.  I was able to muster a 5:10 1st mile, well off the pace at that point.  Just hanging on the rest of the way, but did run my best 5K of the year, I'm not too disappointed considering my focus has been on miles vs. speed this year.

The Great Harvard Fourth of July / 5 miles / Harvard / MA / Monday, July 4 -   A surprise turnout with The Perry Clan and Sherry Brown cheering on the TVFR runners.  I took a wrong turn off of 495 and saw the runners starting as I parked my car.  A mad dash to the road and I had some ground to make up.  I missed about a quarter of a mile but ran 28:42 for miles two through five so I won't include myself in the results.  The course is very challenging with many small hills some dirt roads and a huge "KILLER" hill starting at about two and a half and just when you think it is over there is another one.  The last mile is a very fast downhill finish which saw Jim Perry and John Brown sprint to the finish.  From Jim - Nice organization, nice weather, tough course. Kelly, John and I (Sherry and the kids supporting) headed to the hills of Harvard. So I'm on "the hill" around 3 of 5 miles and I hear over my left shoulder, "Hey Jim." John Brown and I start pushing it trying to real in the 2 in front of us, missing by a few seconds, ending together. The easiest way to describe the course is we both had a split over 1 min./mile slower on the hill as compared to the last mile. Kelly, hoping to break 10's on this challenging course, reached her goal. I think we would all do it again, a lot of fun. I didn't see Martin 'til the end. Maybe if he sets his watch ahead a few minutes?... :)

BMC Independence Day / 5 K / Pittsfield / MA / Monday, July 4 -   Tim and Ryan Kirk traveled to Pittsfield for this race.  From Tim - This is my old hometown, so it was great to finally run there again. The race is an out and back following the July 4th parade route. Big crowds but not much in the way of cheering or encouragement. Also, it was very warm and sunny and there really wasn't much shade along the route. The only split was at mile 1. Lastly, Ryan and I arrived at the finish line to discover that there was only tepid water, no refreshments and we had to congregate in a dirt parking lot. However, we left to view the parade anyway. Despite these shortcomings, I think we'll consider it again next year since it is where Caryn and I both grew up.
