Marathon Training Series Westminster City Park/ 20 miles / Westminster / CO / Sunday, August 27 - Still waiting for results on this one but here is Mikes description.  Don't you hate it when you go off course...........
From Mike  Sawyer- Had a good trip so far, great course with gophers everywhere! You wouldn't believe how many perhaps. I wound up in 5th in 2:20:39 The top 3 runners at least went off course. I was a very very strong second at the time. There was a water stop at 5 miles where unknown to us (nothing was said the other 2 guys mentioned too) we were supposed to double back to the start for the first 10 miles and repeat. Anyways the top runner eventually stopped asking me where we were. We couldn't figure it out and decided to head back to the water stop eventually and looking for the markers as we went. Once we got back there we saw lots of runners looping back and knew what happened.

I've tried scouring some race results looking for the original top 3 for curiosity and fitness evaluation and can't find anything oh well. Although I suspect the top runner, who actually STILL won the race may actually be elite. I think when we got back to the 5 mile mark (6.5 for us?) he dropped it down easily to 5:30's avg. or so for the remaining 15 miles to real in and gap the new leaders. I think he may have actually run much faster than that until he caught them. He actually already had a good gap on them by the 15 mile turnaround, very impressive. I know I ran too fast from 5 to 7 (12:13) and he blew me away I was hurting a cramp a little after that 7 for awhile and had to slow down but still was opening the gap on the original #3. The 'original' 3rd runner who I seemed to reasonably easily outpace was I think Mark Justin or similar. That leaders name who probably we can't compare because he probably could have run as fast as he wanted to ad-hoc was named 'Mike Korir' and I guessed of perhaps Kenyan descent but don't know for sure. Whoever he was he was darn fast.

The Brew Run / 5.2 miles / Houlton / ME / Saturday, August 12 -  Mike Sawyer is at the far northern end of New England and Larry Olsen is at the far southern end for the Brew Run.  Larry finished eleventh in this field of over 1000 runners, first in his division in a day that must have felt like mid November for and very comfortable for the rest of the field.

The County Open Half Marathon / 13.1 miles / Houlton / ME / Saturday, August 12 -  Mike broke that mystical 1:20 barrier and was the first master in this race a long way from home.
From Mike - The weather was great. The course was a beautiful rural run with an earned reputation for a hilly challenging first 6 miles. Won the Masters purse, 5th overall and my time was 1:19:59. I sure was a long ride but enjoyed the country up there.

Stephen's Run / 3.72 miles / Bemus Point / New York / Saturday, August 12 -
From Kelley Terrill -  I ran this race while visiting relatives back home. This was a enjoyable cross country course through wooded trails with a big hill at 1 mile plus start and finished at the shores of Chautauqua lake. The race was a scholarship race memorializing a grandson of one of my parents friends that died of cancer. This seemed to attract many college age runners who knew him when they were younger. The race results are not published on the internet and I was lax on getting the race stats. I would guess there was 60 runners with my overall place around 10th. For awards they gave hand spun pottery plates with the Race name and age/place hand painted on the plate. If I'm lucky enough to be back visiting next year the first week or August I will definitely run this again.

Yankee Homecoming / 10 miles / Newburyport / MA / Tuesday, August 2 -  With temperature rising to 92 and a dew point of 71 this had to be one of the worst running nights in recent years.  The entrants in this years homecoming were down and it had to be related to the dangerous running conditions.  984 runners with three of our own entered.  Larry Olsen finishing thirty-sixth and first in his division.  John Brown finishing fifty-fifth and fourth in his division.  Keith Neal ninety-one and twelve in his division was affected by the heat.

From John - Sherry and I went up the Yankee Homecoming 10 miler and 5k on Tuesday night. We also met Larry, Keith, and Paul there. It was a very hot evening! Temperatures were in the 90’s and it was very humid. Except for Larry and maybe a few others, most of us were impacted by the heat. It’s a big event and it seems everyone in town comes out to cheer. Fortunately, they also came out in droves with their hoses and water. Except for the last 2+ miles, which is a fairly major road, there were very few people, one water stop, and no hoses. What a way to finish. Pretty nice post race spread: water, hot dogs, watermelon, yogurt, cookies, and ice cream.

Yankee Homecoming / 5K / Newburyport / MA / Tuesday, August 2 -  Just over one thousand runners in this race, again numbers were down and it was related to the heat.  Paul Shanahan placed very well finish two hundred and four as times were slowed by the heat.
