Cape Cod Marathon / 26.1 / Falmouth / MA / Sunday, October 29 -  Great job both our runners in the top 12 per cent.
From John Brown - Over 1200 registered with 970 finishers in the Marathon, plus 180 Marathon Relay teams registered as well. Very windy day! Steady 30MPH winds with gusts that were higher made for a difficult race. Sometimes it pushed you much faster than you wanted to go. Other times it almost stopped you in your tracks. Mostly, it just wore you down. The course is very scenic. The first 10 miles and last two miles or so are mostly flat. The middle 14 miles have lots of rolling hills, some challenging. It is certainly not an easy course. There are showers available after the race and a really nice food spread that included: clam chowder, pasta, rolls, salad, bananas, and apples.
From George - John described the conditions exactly. The race organizers did a terrific job in preparing the course. We arrived on Saturday and the wind and rain were ferocious. Sections of the course near exposed beaches were closed to traffic due to storm waves flooding the road. Early in the AM, the DPW had to plow and sweep 1-2 feet of sand from the course in East Falmouth and near the finish on Surf Drive. I was on a PR until about mile 15 when the combination of a head wind and rolling hills took their toll. Finished with a respectable time and 2nd in the veterans. At the awards ceremony the race director introduced one of the women from a winning relay team that just before the start was in a porta-john when it was blown over - pretty windy!

Marine Corps Peoples  / Marathon / Washington / DC / Sunday, October 29 -  The 31st Annual Marine Corps Marathon demonstrated once again why it has been dubbed the "People's Marathon."   Over 20,000 runners participated in this event with Don and Jean Bell of Bar Harbor, Maine among them.

Halloween Hustle / 5K / Waltham / MA / Saturday, October 28 -  Not the best weekend to have a road race or even a training run with the rain and the wind.  These Tri-Valley runners did very well for themselves with Mary picking up third in her division.
From Mary - Not the greatest of days, but not too horrible weather-wise: pretty wet underfoot, light to moderate rain with a few wind gusts that send additional showers of multi-colored leaves from the trees overhead. My time was fast enough for 3rd place in age group and a nice backpack as a reward. I also got to meet and talk with Jack Fultz, winner of the Boston Marathon back in 76, the year of the Run for the Hoses, when the temperature midcourse hit 100 degrees.  So, all in all a very good day, despite the weather.

Cam Neely Race  / 5K / Milford / MA / Sunday, October 22 -  The weather was much better than last years gully washer.  Between the TVFR volunteers and racers we had a good turn out and some very impressive times were turned in.  Larry Olsen the 2005 winner slipped - wish I could slip like him - to second and first in his division.  Elizabeth Morin second female and first in her division.  Great races by Frank Ferrante, Katy Knox, Terri Mazzarelli, Charlene Gaboriault, Jo-Ellen McCarrick, Erica Mazzarelli and Kate Bett.

Mystic Country  / Marathon / East Lyme / CT / Sunday, October 22 -  A field of 529 competed in this marathon with Mike Carroll finishing seventh overall and first in his division.  Looks like we have some good marathoners this year.  Good job Mike..
From Mike - near perfect weather, rolling course, very scenic, a great Boston qualifier providing the weather co-operates, course runs along the water so if it's windy or rainy...your cooked) food was o.k. I would run it again, but register on race day if the weather is good

The Breakers  / Marathon / Middletown / RI/ Saturday, October 21 -  A field of 327 runners with Sherry Brown finishing very well.  I know exactly how you feel.  I missed my goal in my Half.  Sherry set a PR for her Half.  Great job.  Time to pick another marathon...... Sherry
From Sherry - Well, the course?  Ummmmm....I can say that I underestimated the hills.  No question about it.  Decent long climbers on the back side of the loop. (of a 3 loop course) These hills were depective when we drove the course. ( a series of hills about 4.25 miles long with only one downhill of maybe 1/2 mile long!!!) I never broke stride the first loop through the course dispite the wind...which was brutal.  I certainly had trouble with the breathing as a result.  The Second loop....I dreaded the hills because I knew not only was I tiring, but the wind would once again be in my face.  I took more walk breaks but almost maintained pace....lost just little bit of time.
Check this out.....at the half my time was 2:17 and change..that would be a PR half for me...go figure. (this is where the lead pack passed me and they looked none too good themselves!)  I was moving along quite well!  So, come lap 3...ugh..the series of hill again and the wind in the face...ugh!  I did what I had to do...and just do it the best that I can.  Of course the hills beat me up this 3rd loop and then I had to finish a 2 loop run on the track...that was super sucky!  What the hell is that...2 loops on a track.  Not only do you get to see the finish line, you get to run right on past it before you can run into it....double UGH!  By now, mental strength-gone!  Strange IT feeling happening in the last 2 miles....what was that all about..never had that before......mental strength---was shot!!!  I finished anyways and missed my PR by 19 stupid seconds!!!!!  So, do you  know what that means?  I have to run another one......I can do this!

Bay State  Half Marathon  / 13.1 miles / Lowell / MA / Sunday, October 15 -  Just under One Thousand runners in the half marathon (nine hundred and forty-six) finishers.  Four TVFR in the race with me leading the troops followed by Anita Stephens, Ted Tyler and Mark Stephens.  Ted and I missed the awards finishing fourth in our respective divisions.   Come on runners tell us your experience.
From Martin -  A near perfect fall morning.  The temperature was a brisk 34 degrees at the start but the sun quickly warmed the runners and the streets.  For the most part there was a light breeze that did pick up from miles two to four and again at miles eight and nine of the second loop along the river.  The race had a different twist this year with both the Half Marathon and the Marathon starting at the same time.  Race officials kept the marathon runners to the left side of the road and the Half Marathoners to the right.  We all ran together for about the first three miles before the marathoners headed out to Tyngsboro and we took a right crossing the Merrimack River and then running along side it.  Plenty of water stops with well marked splits.  I thought I was pretty well rested going into this race but I really felt the series of short steep hills on the second loop and my splits dropped off for three miles.  I lost focus and slipped into a melancholy pace until a group of six or seven runners passed me by.  That snapped me back into the race and knowing the course helped greatly.  I picked up my pace over the last four miles running 7:05, 7:01 6:57 and 6:57.  I missed my goal of a sub 7  pace by 40 seconds but now feel confident that given the right day and the right course I can do it.

Bay State Marathon  / 26.2 miles / Lowell / MA / Sunday, October 15 -  Perfect fall weather.  Sunny sky and a temperature that warmed to the low 50's during the marathon.  Harold Jarvis turned in a great race in this his first marathon.  A field of six hundred and seventy-seven runners and Harold finished 219 and fifteenth in in his division.  Can't wait to hear about his experience
From Harry - It was after the Iron Horse Half Marathon that I did with Martin and Mike Sawyer that I started to give serious consideration to running a full marathon.  A little research convinced me that I had a shot at qualifying for Boston and that became my goal.  I picked a pace of 8:10 which would give me 2 minutes to spare.  At that pace the first 18 miles were easy.  At mile 19 I was exactly on pace and feeling strong.  At mile 20 I was still strong but I noticed that my pace had slipped a little.  (I can't be sure of exactly how much because I have a hard time reading the seconds on my watch without my glasses on.)   At mile 21 I had slipped some more and was starting to feel the effects of the run but, with only 5.2 to go I gritted my teeth and tried to hold pace.  Earlier I had been confident that if I made it to 23 I would be home free, but as I actually passed 23 I was beginning to doubt whether I could hold on.  At 24 I wanted to quit.  There were a lot of people walking by then,  and I saw them load one guy in the ambulance, and the little guy with the pitchfork was saying "Just quit.  You know you want to and you're not going to make it in time anyway."  but the sweet girl with the halo was saying "You've worked too hard to stop now.  Just two more miles.  You can make it."  So I sucked it up and pushed a little harder.  That next mile was brutal.  I would have sworn that I missed mile marker 25, but then there it was up ahead.  My thighs were burning and my legs were feeling heavy but when I passed the "one mile to go" mark and I still had more than one extra minute I knew I was going to make it.  I was real happy to see that last bridge.  Jaci (my wife) was screaming to me from the top of the stands.  Once in the stadium I could see the clock and I knew I'd be under 3:35.  I still can't believe it myself.  For a while I felt like doo-doo, but after some soup and beans and water I improved a bit.  Today my knee and ankle hurt, and of course my muscles are sore, but my spirits have improved considerably.

Wakefield High School / 5K / Wakefield / NC / Saturday, October 14 -  A deceivingly tough course, quite hilly with no significant down hills. A great mix of serious runners, H.S. runners, football players and recreational runners.  Festive atmosphere with some raffle prizes and good awards.  This race benefited Students against Drunk Driving and Drugs as the H.S. lost 4 students in an accident last spring.
From Tim Kirk - The race director was Ryan's x-country coach and our friend.  Unfortunately, I am not even close to racing form, still fighting a nagging Achilles injury.  This was my first race since the Boston Marathon and given that, along with my rash of injuries, I am pleased with the result.  Ryan ran well as he has all year for his new team.  Caryn placed 2nd in her age group and had me looking over my shoulder the whole way.

The Bob Biagiotti Road Race  / 5K / Franklin / MA / Saturday, October 14 -  A field of One hundred and fifty-two runners on a perfect fall day.  Light wind with bright blue sky and sunshine.  Temperature warmed to the fifties after a clear and cold start.  Alex Schopf of Whitinsville was the first TVFR across the finish line and first place in his division.  Terri Mazzarelli with just a few days off after the Tufts 10K finished third in her division and Erica took third in her division.

Tufts 10K for Women / 10K / Boston / MA / Monday, October 9 -  Your editor has to apologize here.  I missed Elizabeth Morin this morning when I was reviewing the results and as you can see below she was way up in the field with a great overall placement and an even better place in her division.  Sorry I missed you Elizabeth - Martin.  A very warm day for the field of over six thousand ladies in this thirtieth annual event.  TVFR was proudly represented by  Elizabeth, Kathryn, Terri, Jo-Ellen, Kate, Mary and Debbie and they all ran very well in a packed and hot race.  The race went off at noon with a cloudless sky and a temperature near 80 degrees.  Elizabeth Morin was  first lady TVFR in followed closely by Kathryn Fetteroll, Terri Mazzarelli and Jo-Ellen McCarrick.  Kate Bett, Mary Tyler and Debbie Gaulitz rounded out this terrific group.

Mohawk-Hudson River  / Marathon / Albany / NY / Sunday, October 8 -  A field of 421 runners with our own Mike Sawyer having a fantastic run.  Mike finished fourth overall and first in his division with an amazing pace of 6:23 over the entire distance.
From Mike - It looks like I was able to run reasonably even most of the time with a 1:23:15 at the half and a 2:46:56 finish and I may not have hit much if any wall. I seemed to finish strong enough with my splits coming down again after 22 miles where I averaged a 6:14 pace from 22 thru the race finish.  It did help me move from 7th to 4th after 20 miles.

B.A.A.  / Half Marathon / Boston / MA / Sunday, October 8 -  A field of nearly four thousand runners through the streets of Boston on a near perfect fall morning.  Sunny cloudless skies with a temperature near 50 at the start for the run through the Fenway, turning around at Franklin Park and back to the Fenway.  Todd Keiller of Hopkinton had a very good race with a thirty-second place finish in his division.  The surprise of the summer was former Mifordonian Jacqui Lewis now of Brighton with an overall finish of 684 in this huge field and seventy-ninth in her division.  Looks like she has been doing some running this summer.  Great job Todd and Jacqui.
